What are the problems related to Exhaust Systems

The Exhaust System of your car is among the most vital components of your car. It makes sure the proper breathing of your car, i.e., it takes the choking fumes out of your car, and the passengers inside the car don't even know how it happened. It smoothens the functioning of the engine and makes the car fuel efficient. It reduces the noise of the car to a minimum. So its care becomes very important.

Here are some common problems related to car exhaust systems and their warning signs:

An exhaust system consists of six parts and each one of these has its own problems.

       Exhaust Manifold
 Oxygen Sensor
 Catalytic Converter
 Diesel Particulate Filter
 Exhaust Pipe
 Muffler / Silencer

Exhaust System Problems
Rust is one of the basic problems of the Exhaust system of a vehicle.

Problems with the exhaust manifold
Exhaust manifolds are responsible to carry gases through the exhaust system to the tail pipe and finally out of the car. These makes sure that these toxic gases do not enter the car.
Sometimes due to extreme heat, exhaust manifolds are damaged and cracks are developed in them. These cracks can widen and cause greater problems.

Problems with the oxygen sensor
The oxygen sensor maintains the oxygen level in the exhaust system. It consequently adds to reduces fuel.
When oxygen sensors are used for a long time, they tend to give wrong measurements. Some vehicles give an alert when such a situation occurs. Replacing them as soon as possible can save a lot efforts and money.

Problems with the catalytic converter
A catalytic converter converts harmful toxic gases into less toxic ones. So they are very important as far as pollution control is concerned.
Catalytic converters can choke or get blocked. An engine generally loses power and the underside of the vehicle warms up when such a thing happens.

Problems with the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
This component is found in diesel engines and removes the particulate matter from the gases. It is very important to fit a DPF in your diesel vehicle in order to meet the new emission standards.
DPFs also tend to get blocked over time and may need replacement.

Problems with the Muffler (Silencer)
Mufflers reduce noise that comes out during the combustion process using perforated tubes.
The vehicle sounds louder than usual if something is wrong with the muffler. It should be examined regularly. There can be rust or holes in the muffler, which can cause a serious damage to it.

Problem with Exhaust Pipe
All components are connected by exhaust pipes. Their primary role is directing the gas through all parts of the exhaust system and finally push them out of the tail pipe.
These linking pipes can become so rusty that small holes can be seen developed in them.
